Exhibition “The Tale of Karelia” works from November 15th till December 22nd, 2019.
On the 15 of November, an exhibition of Russian and Karelian artist Alexander Kashtanov will open in the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia. The Exhibition is devoted to the artist’s 90th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his artistic activity. The exhibition will include some of the master’s new watercolor works and works from the artist’s studio, as well as from the Museum of Fine Arts and private collections.
In his 90 years, Alexander Kashtanov surprises with a tireless interest in creativity and incomprehensible hard work. Along with other artists, he continues the tradition of the Karelian landscape painting and also is included in the Karelian watercolorists’ association.
The landscapes by Kashtanov, lyrical and strict in colors, are done in the unpredictable and obstinate watercolor technique “Wet-on-Wet”. In 1951, after finishing his studies in the Penza Art School of Savitskii, he connected his life to difficult service in the border forces of the KGB in the USSR. Upon finishing his studies, Alexander Kashtanov was called into military service and sent to Kharkov Border School, after which he joined the ranks of the Border Troops. Over the course of 20 years of service in border units on the Amur river, the Kurile Islands and in Kaliningrad, Latvia, Estonia and Karelia, he continued to do creative work – painting and participating in regional exhibitions.
Alexander Kashtanov resigned in 1973 and fully devoted himself to painting. Today he is the participant of republican, Russian and international exhibitions, the laureate of art exhibitions in Japan and Malta, and the winner of the all-Russian FSB competition in the category “Fine Art” for a series of watercolors “Everyday Life of the Border” and “Karelia-Borderland”. In 1989 he was accepted as a member of the Russia’s Union of Artists, in 1999 he was assigned the title of “Honored Artist of the Republic of Karelia, in 2006, by order of the President of the Russian Federation, Alexander Kashtanov was given the title of Honored Artist of Russia. Kashtanov was the Laureat of the Republic of Karelia in 2008.
